Better Substitutes: Fiesta Style

You already know how I feel about Mexican food... It's the best. And we've already discussed how it's not always the healthiest option. Here are some recommendations on how to turn your next Fiesta into a party that is not only fun, but leaves you feeling good!

Fiesta Substitutes

1. Tortillas:

  • Regular Flour Tortillas (2): 280 Calories
    • Carbs: 48g
    • Fat: 7g
    • Protein: 8g
  • Siete Brand Almond Flour Tortillas (2): 190 Calories
    • Carbs: 17g
    • Fat: 12g
    • Protein: 5g

When you look at the nutrition information, you may notice the high amount of fat for the almond flour tortillas. This is because it has a lot of... Almonds. BUT they are made from all real ingredients, so they are better for you. Siete also has a cassava and coconut tortilla with the following nutrition: 130 Calores - Carbs: 24g, Fat: 3.5g, Protein: 1g. I highly recommend them! We buy ours at Natural Grocers.

2. Sour Cream vs. Greek Yogurt:

  • Sour Cream (2 oz): 113 Calories
    • Carbs: 1.9g
    • Fat: 9.4g
    • Protein: 1.9g
  • Greek Yogurt (2 oz): 33 Calories
    • Carbs: 2.3g
    • Fat: 0g
    • Protein: 6g

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Sour cream is high in fat, while Greek yogurt is high in protein. We get our Greek Yogurt at Costco.

3. Tortilla Chips:

  • Regular Tortilla Chips (~10 chips): 140 Calories
    • Carbs: 17g
    • Fat: 7g
    • Protein: 2g
  • Siete Brand Tortilla chips (~9 chips): 140 Calories:
    • Carbs: 19g
    • Fat: 7g
    • Protein: 1g

At first glance, you may not see much of a reason to switch over. But the Siete chips are better for you for the same reason their tortillas are: They are made from all real ingredients! We also find these are Natural Grocer.

4Salsa: Overall, there are a lot of good salsas out there, but check the ingredients to make sure they aren't full of fake ingredients! Joe T Garcia's salsa is my personal favorite, and 100% natural! And salsa is always a great substitute for other "flavor adding" sauces!

Happy Fiesta!
