Nutrition Challenge 101: First Things First

So you’ve decided to do the Nutrition Challenge! Or at least you’re thinking about it... Let’s talk first things first.

Before we even begin talking about food, let’s take a moment to start with the big picture. If you’ve spent any time at all around coach Jonathan or coach Mike, you know that at Eta we truly believe that mindset is a key part of everything we do, in and out of the gym. And this is no exception. Before we even start the challenge, we need to take some time to think about why we are doing this...

No, we are not doing this because we want to lose weight. We aren’t doing it because we enjoy denying ourselves and whipping our bodies into submission. No, it’s not because coach Mike or coach Jonathan or your gym bestie told you to. It’s not even because you read this super convincing blog by one of the coach’s wives about doing it (we’ll see if I convince you by the end of this...) So why the heck are we doing this?

We ARE doing this because we care about our long term health. The goal of the Nutrition Challenge is to build daily habits that will lead to long term health. And why do we care about building healthy habits? Because eating healthy for a month and then returning right back to your old habits really doesn’t do you much good in the long run, now does it?

When we are young, it’s easy to forget that someday our bodies won’t be quite as resilient as they are now. This makes it easy to forget that our daily decisions matter in the long run. When we get older, we start to see the effects of years of daily decisions adding up. One donut today might not be that big of a deal. But a donut everyday for years and years can set you up for all sorts of health issues down the road - diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart attack to name a few. THIS is why we are doing the Nutrition Challenge. We want to set up long term daily habits that have a positive effect on our bodies, not a negative one.

The second way that our mindset matters in the Nutrition Challenge is this: owning it for yourself. Who are you doing this for? Seriously, who is this for? If your answer is anyone but yourself, then you need to take a second look. You have two options here: choose to take ownership of this process, or let it own you. Be in charge of what you put in your body, or let the challenge control you. It’s all about mindset. If you take charge and decide that YOU made the decision to do this because YOU care about YOUR health, I promise you this challenge will be 1,000 times easier. If you pity yourself and “suffer” through the challenge as a victim of the rules that your coaches set, then you’re already failing and completely missing the point. This same point (owning it for yourself) applies to any long term change you want to make in your life by the way, but we’ll stay focused on nutrition here (that bit was free).

Ok now that you’ve gotten some tough love, let me cheer you on! YOU CAN DO THIS! I 100% believe in you. No matter where you are starting, just by participating you are taking a step in the right direction. Heck, maybe just reading this blog and thinking about your mindset is a step in the right direction. I believe you can not only do this, but you can CRUSH IT! This Nutrition Challenge may even change your life more than you can even imagine. I know this because that’s exactly what it did for me earlier this year! I went from Chick-fil-A queen (seriously, I should have bought stock) to Paleo loving fiend! And that’s why I know you’ve got this!

I’ll end with a quote from the Whole30 website, referring to the decision to do the Whole30. Note: We are not doing Whole30, but the concept still applies:

“This is not hard. Don’t you dare tell us this is hard. Fighting cancer is hard. Birthing a baby is hard. Losing a parent is hard. Drinking your coffee black. Is. Not. Hard. You’ve done harder things than this, and you have no excuse not to complete the program as written. It’s only thirty days, and it’s for the most important health cause on earth—the only physical body you will ever have in this lifetime.”

Now let’s crush this!
