Sourcing Quality Meat

Last week Mike told us all about the importance of purchasing quality meat. He explained to us that quality meats are:

-Grass Fed and Grass Finished
-Pasture Raised
-Never Administered Hormones
-Never Administered Antibiotics
-Raises Sustainably and Humanely

Unfortunately, the majority of meat sold in conventional grocery stores are industrial raised, factory farmed, toxin laden, and full of chemicals and heavy metals. When the meat we eat is full of toxins, what do you think gets passed along to us?

I think we would all agree toxins, chemicals and heavy metals should have no place in the food we are eating. Meat marketing companies are tricky. A lot of us are eating meat that we think is better for us than it actually is. For example, the word “Natural” on packaging. There is no legal standard for what “Natural” means.

So, how can you tell if the meat you are buying is high quality or not? Here are a few things to look for on meat labels to know if they are truly quality choices:

  • Grass Fed

  • Grass Finished

  • Pastured

  • Wild-caught

  • Nitrate, antibiotic, and hormone free (Non-GMO)

  • Certified organic

If the meat you are looking at is not labeled any of the above things, it’s safe to assume it was industrial raised and contains a slew of unhealthy things.

Now, in a perfect world, we would all have the ability to buy only high quality meat. For most of us, that is not a reality. If this is your case, here are a few suggestions.

First, prioritize high quality meat over organic fruits and vegetables. When weighing the negative impacts of industrial raised meat versus fruits and vegetables, the risks associated with meat far outweigh those of produce,

Second, if buying lower quality meats, select lower fat cuts and trim extra fat. Much of the “bad things” that are in industrial raised meats are stored in the fat. By minimizing the fat you eat, you will avoid consuming more of the negative substances.

One of the reasons that we decided to team up with Strauss Direct Meats is because we understand that it can be hard to find and trust quality meat sources at conventional grocery stores. When you order meat from Strauss Direct, you can rest assured that you will be receiving quality meat from a reliable source.
