During a night-time mission in Iraq on February 4, 2008,  he and a teammate made entry into a building held by insurgents and were immediately struck by small arms fire. Chief Petty Officer Nate Hardy, 29, was mortally wounded but continued to engage the enemy while dragging Chief Petty Officier Michael Koch to safety. Both men would later succumb to their wounds. Nate is survived by his wife, Mindi, and his infant son Parker.
